Leopold and his Fiction will be previewing songs from their forthcoming album –recorded with GRAMMY®-nominated producer-engineer Chris "Frenchie" Smith (The Datsuns, Jet, The Dandy Warhols) – during a two-month headline club tour. The run, which will kick off on March 17 at Backstage Live in San Antonio, TX, will include shows at The Viper Room in West Hollywood, CA (April 22), Neck of the Woods in San Francisco, CA (April 24), New Way Bar in Ferndale, MI (May 1), New York City’s Mercury Lounge (May 5) and DC9 in Washington, DC (May 6). Before hitting the road, the band will perform at six SXSW showcases, including those hosted by the City of Austin and Frenchie Smith Records. See below for itinerary.

Lead vocalist/guitarist Daniel James grew up in the Motor City, where he soaked up the hip-shaking grooves of Motown and the protopunk resonance of Iggy's Stooges. After sojourns in Los Angeles and San Francisco, he settled in Austin. Leopold and his Fiction’s essential make up sprouted from collaborations made on the road in the whirlwind cycle of touring. Allmusic.com praised the band’s music, which “fuses elements of blues, folk-rock, garage rock, and roots music into a style that feels at once rough and cohesive, with a warmth and emotional honesty that coheres with the energy of the music.”

The L.A. Record, covering Leopold and his Fiction’s blistering 2013 SXSW show, noted, “This was all rock and soul. They had a beefcake, boogie, balls-to-the-wall sound…with talent enough to deliver the goods…” “Daniel James is such a charismatic singer and filthy guitar player, it’s a wonder he’s not playing big rooms on the Strip,” said the Las Vegas Weekly in a review of a 1 a.m. show last fall. “No matter what time this band goes on, it’s always worth the wait.” “Maybe it’s the handlebar mustache of front man Daniel James, or the combination of garage rock, psychedelic festival music, and glitter rock that keep audiences transfixed,” suggested the Waco Weekly, advising, “If you’re a first-timer to a Leopold show, don’t be shy…Get ready for showmanship and revelry; there will be plenty.”

It’s this kind of sonic fever that landed Leopold and his Fiction recent support slots for The Cult and ZZ Top, led to song placements in such television shows as “Sons of Anarchy” (FX), “Dallas” (TNT), and “Deadliest Catch (Discovery Channel) and licensing by Gap, Ray-ban, Volvo and Monster Energy BMX, among others, and attracted the attention of Chris "Frenchie" Smith, who produced the upcoming album with James.

“Frenchie saw our show and listened to our records. He was very blunt and said, ‘I’m confidant I can make you guys shine!’” recalls James, who is also a founding member of the alt-country-folk-rock band Cowboy and Indian. “He’s brought a lot out of us. The band elicits a power when it’s time to perform that can’t be harnessed in any other medium short of a fistfight. Whether that’s on stage or in a recording studio, it’s almost hard to contain it.”

The as-yet untitled album is due out later this year, but you can check out the official video for one of the new tracks, "I'm Caving In," HERE and watch as the band unveils a new 15-second video each Tuesday at https://vimeo.com/leopoldandhisfiction/videos.

“Leopold is a fictional entity that gives me a vehicle to explore different characters,” explains James. “For me, it is similar to writing a novel by cultivating very specific personalities in various and often ominous situations with different outcomes.”
